Moses Jewelers… Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow

The Beginning

In 1945, Merril Moses graduated from high school in the midst of World War II and immediately joined the Navy. After serving, he returned to his hometown to decide on a career. Using funds provided by the GI Bill, he attended West Penn Horological School of Watchmaking in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and graduated in 1948. In 1949, in a small store no larger than 12 X 15 feet, Merril began in the jewelry business as a watchmaker in Lyndora, Pennsylvania. With the commitment to provide customers with quality, value, personal service and trust, a strong foundation was laid; and Merril’s business prospered.

Relocation and Expansion

In 1968, after 19 years in such a cramped space, Merril made the decision to move Moses Jewelers to downtown Butler at 115 West Cunningham Street. After that relocation, the business really exploded!

Merril’s wife, Jane, and all of their six children worked in the business at one time or another.

Larry, Merril and Jane’s oldest son, grew up helping his father with Moses Jewelers. After graduating from high school, he attended and graduated from The Joseph Bulova School of Watchmaking in New York City in 1972. When it comes to service, Larry’s customers know he will always go the extra mile or ten! “Whatever it takes”, says Larry. “That’s what I’m here for…and I’ve been here a long time, all my life really!” In 2017, Larry celebrated his 45th year in the business. Ever stylish, he is a life-long watch aficionado, and he loves sharing this passion and knowledge as he continues to source unique Pre-owned Rolex, Patek Philippe and other luxury Swiss wathces for a new generation of clients.

In 1981, Moses Jewelers opened a second store in the newly constructed Clearview Mall just north of downtown Butler. Today, that store continues to serve a new generation of customers. We are very fortunate to have a long-tenured, loyal store manager, Tom Good, at the helm overseeing daily operations.  With us for over 33 years, he's helped incorporate new trends and expand our Vintage & Contemporary Estate Collection.  These additions complement our timeless traditions of exceptional, unique diamond engagement and colored gemstone jewelry and watches. And, on most days, you will still find Merril there as well. Often relaxing with his friends in the adjacent food court, it’s been over 70 years since he founded Moses Jewelers.

Tim, Merril and Jane’s youngest son, started in the business in 1986 after graduating first from The Pennsylvania State University and then from The Gemological Institute of America where he earned a Graduate Gemologist degree. He oversees the day-to-day operations of the business, hand selects and grades diamonds and other gems, and searches to find sources for many custom jewelry requests. “I guess everybody around here thinks I’m the serious one, at least that’s what I hear. I admit, I do have high expectations and expect a lot from everyone. But that is what our customers deserve, the very best each of us has to offer!” Tim continues to love sharing his passion for sparkling exquisite diamonds and unusual vibrant colored gemstones.

New Ideas and Another New Location

Always searching for new innovative ideas, in 1995, Merril, Larry, and Tim decided to purchase and refurbish an original standing street clock designed by Rolex in 1928 for a prominent jeweler in Washington, DC. Located only five blocks from the White House, it kept U.S. presidents and dignitaries on time for over 27 years! There was quite a celebration on Cunningham Street as they unveiled it that October.

2008 brought another new addition to the Moses family of jewelry stores. Never resistant to change and always looking to the future, Merril fully supported his sons’ decision to expand beyond Butler. Located on Route 228 in Seven Fields, PA, this new store provided Moses Jewelers with a fresh opportunity to serve southern Butler County with the same excellent quality, value, and professional service that have always been the foundation of the business.  The cornerstones of Moses Jewelers remains unchanged: Passion, Knowledge, Service, and Trust. Close to Pittsburgh and with easy access from Interstate 279, this location is THE Destination for the region’s fine jewelry shoppers! Alongside this new venture came the closing of the Cunningham Street store in downtown Butler.

The Next Chapters: Our Message

“Our history is a rich one, and our future is bright!”  We used the plural intentionally; there are many chapters yet to come.  In 2018,  Moses Jewelers celebrated 10 years at the “New”  Seven Fields/Cranberry Township location!  Since opening, this store has recently been extensively remodeled.  The Clearview Mall store boasts subtle refurbishing as well.
